What we keep, and what we don't

Phatiks is built to know as little as possible about the people who play. This page says exactly what that is, where it is kept, and how to have it deleted.

For players

The short version

If you play without signing in, we don't know who you are. Nothing about you is saved by us. The game remembers where you got to on this device only.

If a grown-up has signed you in, your scores are saved under a nickname, not your name. Only that grown-up's account can see them.

Nothing you type in a game is sent to us or to any AI. There are no adverts and nothing is sold.

Who we are

Phatiks Ltd

Phatiks Ltd is a UK limited company. We decide how the information described here is used, which makes us the "data controller". We have paid the data protection fee to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator. To ask anything about this page, or to use any of your rights, email hello@phatiks.com.

What we collect

Three ways to play

How you playWhat we keep
Just play
no sign-in
Nothing about the player. The game keeps progress (levels reached, personal bests) in the browser's own storage on that device, so an interrupted game can carry on. It never leaves the device.
Free account
a parent or carer signs up
The parent's email address and a password (stored scrambled; we never see it). A nickname for each child, chosen by the parent: please don't use a real name. For each game played, a score row: which game, the score, when, and what was played and how far it got (for example the level, text or case, and counts such as words won). No free text a child types is ever saved.
Give feedbackWhat you put in the form: your feedback, a key stage and, if you choose, your name.

We never ask for a child's real name, email, date of birth, school, photo or location. There are no advertising or tracking tools on the site, and no cookies are used to follow you. We do count plays, anonymously: see Counting plays.

Why

What we use it for

To run the account you asked for: signing in, keeping each child's scores and bests, and letting the games pick up where a child left off. (Our legal basis is the agreement you make with us when you sign up.)

To make the games better: we look at patterns across all players, such as which levels people get stuck on. We never use this to make decisions about an individual child. (Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving the games.)

To write to you when you asked us to: account holders may get an occasional email about the games, and can ask us to stop at any time.

Counting plays

How we know the games are being played

When a game is started on phatiks.com, we add one to a count: which game, the date, and whether it was played from the home-screen app or a web browser. That is all. The count is not linked to a person, an account or a device, no IP address is kept with it, and nothing is stored on your device to make it work. We use the counts only to see which games are being played, so we can improve them. (Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving the games.)

If you would rather your plays were not counted, switch it off here. It applies to this browser, or to the home-screen app if you open this page there.

Where it is kept

Who handles it for us

Supabase runs our database and sign-in. Accounts, nicknames, scores and the anonymous play counts are stored in Ireland. Each family's rows are locked to that family's account by the database itself.

Netlify hosts the website and receives the two forms. Like any web host, it records each visit's IP address and browser type in its server logs, and we can view those logs for up to seven days. We use them only to keep the site running and fix problems, never to identify anyone. An IP address points to a network, such as a home or school, not to a person.

Both are US companies with data processing agreements that cover UK data protection law. Our fonts and code are served from phatiks.com itself, so no other company learns that you visited. We do not sell or share information with anyone else.

How long

How long we keep it

Accounts and scores: for as long as the account is in use. If an account is not signed in to for two years, we delete it and its children's scores.

Feedback: up to two years, then deleted, unless you agreed we could quote you.

Server logs that include IP addresses are kept for a short time: up to seven days for our web host, and a day for our database provider. They are not used to identify anyone.

Your rights

Seeing, correcting and deleting

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you or your child, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete a child's nickname and scores, or the whole account. Email hello@phatiks.com from the address on the account. We will do it within one month, and usually much sooner.

If you are not happy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Teachers and schools

Using Phatiks in lessons

In class, play without signing in: no pupil information reaches us. If a school wants pupils' scores kept, please talk to us first, so that the school's own data protection arrangements are in place before anyone signs in.
